LOWGC Rifle Division Holds July Rimfire Benchrest Score Match

IMG_2163

On Sunday July 26th, seventeen shooters vied for bragging rights in the summer heat as temperatures topped 30 degrees Celsius. Good thing we had the shade of our new roof to make the day more comfortable. The morning started off with calm winds, but by late morning the conditions had changed to an interesting switchy tail wind. Shooters had to bear down hard not to lose a shot.  The day was filled with good natured rivalries and anticipation of upsets that never materialized. Special thanks to Carla Jack for filling in when needed, and to Al Carlson for scoring. Also a well-deserved thank you goes out to the competitors and volunteers who came out in good number to support the Club and help run the event.

Range Inspection Passed

June 17th our Club was inspected by Chief Inspector Peter Niedermaier, Jeff Barnes and Richard Gray. Generally we came through the inspection in good shape although there are some backstop and side berm issues that will be corrected shortly.

Something new for 2015 is that all Clubs in Ontario are now required to have gunshot trauma kits. The inspectors were very impressed that we were the only club in Ontario to already have one on each range since 2012

Special well deserved thank you to the crew of volunteers who groomed the Club property before the inspection. Thanks to Eric Liznick, Colleen Coker, Al Carlson Jacques Choquette, the Division Chairmen and others. And thank you to the general members who show pride in our facility and clean up after themselves.

The Club received compliments on the overall well maintained clean condition and neat appearance.

LOWGC Rifle Division Holds May Rimfire Benchrest Score Match

Sunday May 31st seventeen shooters gathered at the Jacques Choquette Rifle Range in Kenora Ontario for some friendly competition. The cool morning temperature made it necessary to fire many shots on the sighter target to warm up the barrels enough to shoot straight. The wind was also a factor as the wind speed and constant change of direction made it difficult to keep your shots anywhere near the 10 ring. Despite the challenging conditions, some shooters managed to perform well with Sporter Class scores shot by juniors that were comparable to, or within reach of the Unlimited Class.

Women’s Shoot a Success

On April 25th, the Pistol Club hosted a Powder Puff Shoot for women only.  Ten local women participated in this fun competition, which was a timed event involving steel targets as well as paper scoring targets.  The ladies even had to slay a Zombie to complete the course of fire.  Many of the women were novice shooters but did very well on the course that involved a .22 caliber rifle, .22 pistol and, a 9mm pistol.  Many thanks to all of the volunteers: Eric Liznik, Robyn and Jerry Whitaker, Daryl Biggs and Al Smith!!  Everyone had a blast!!  I would also like to thank Dwayne Cyr and Eric Liznik who have done such a great job of upgrading the steel target area.  They built the “log cabin” that houses the large target trees.  The target trees are self-resetting and now have heavy plates for 9mm through to .45 as well as lighter plates for .22.  My wife’s favorite steel targets are the small silhouette animals.  Do yourself a favour and take your sweetheart out to the club to plink with a .22 or something bigger, you’ll be glad you did!!

Rifle Division Holds 2015 Benchrest for Score Match

April 26th the LOWGC Rifle Division held our 100 meter Hunter Benchrest Match right on time thanks to the early spring thaw. Conditions were mild but shooting over the 40, 60 and 75 meter Rimfire Silhouette bunkers gave us some unexplained hi/lo shots. There were 13 shooters, some with really good shooting factory guns shot by guys who knew how to get the best out of them. There were two new range records set. Rod Jack obliterated his old Hunter Class record by 16 points and Jacques Choquette beat his old Varmint Hunter record by six points. There were more 50 targets shot with factory guns than any previous match. In VFS/Open Class there was a 2 way tie for first place and a 2 way tie for second place with the same number of points and X dots. The ties were decided by the “miss and out” method starting on the first bull of the first target.

Hunter Class

1st Place Rod Jack 243/250 (3X) .308
2nd Place Rod MacDonell 203/250 (1X) .308
3rd Place Ken Chambers 192/250   .308

Varmint Hunter Class

1st Place Jacques Choquette 243/250 (6X) .223
2nd Place Donovan Jack 237/250 (3X) .223
3rd Place Calvin Yanchycki 234/250 .223

VFS/Open Class

1st Place Matt Cyr 249/250 (6X) 6ppc
2nd Place Phil Nick 249/250 (6X) .30 br
3rd Place Calvin Yanchycki 248/250 (8X) 6ppc

Thanks to Spencer King, Calvin and the Jack family for driving long distances to improve the quality of our competition. Cal shot his first 3 targets clean and I thought he was going to flog us like he does in Selkirk. Thanks to the shooters and volunteers that help make these shoots possible.
